The Second Sunday of Easter

We celebrate Easter because Jesus gives us good reasons not to be afraid. Jesus conquered death. God has promised to protect us. God uses everything for our good.

Because Jesus lives, we don’t have to be afraid. And we can bring that peace and confidence to others—even through locked doors. If there was ever a time that people might recognize that they need Jesus, this is it!

Jesus still comes to take fear away, still comes to save, still comes to bless, still comes to give life. Those gifts are ours to share, especially now.

Here’s the Children’s sermon from last year on this text:

What Can You Do to Get the Love of God Through Closed Doors? In the sermon, I referred to some ways that you can share God’s love with people during this social distancing. I’ve written them down here for you.

Emotional

  • Network to get phone numbers and email addresses of neighbors, particularly the elderly
  • Reach out proactively via call, text or email to combat possible isolation and loneliness
  • Resist fear that’s reading to panic – modeling peace and calm in the midst of rising anxiety

Spiritual

  • Call and ask how their family is doing and how they feel about the pandemic – this is an ideal time to have spiritual conversations, so watch for doors to open to share your faith
  • Prepare answers to tough questions like “Where’s the meaning in all of this?”, “Where is the Lord in this crisis?” and “How do I pray?”
  • Call, email, text, or send cards and letters to check to see if you can help with anything and ask for prayer requests
  • Email or text with scripture or links to online Bible study tools, devotionals, church, etc.

Medical

  • Exercise your responsibility to protect those around you – abide by distancing orders

Financial

  • Shop at neighborhood stores to support small businesses
  • Purchase gift cards for neighbors who are isolated, lost jobs or are ill

Physical

  • Order a meal or groceries from a local establishment and have it delivered to a neighbor
  • Donate extra supplies you’ve purchased to someone on your street you know is struggling
  • Pick up over the counter medications on behalf of a senior living nearby
  • Run errands for families who are caring for a sick child or parent
  • Provide child care for people who have to work

Logistical

  • Pick up over the counter medications on behalf of a senior living nearby
  • Run errands for families who are caring for a sick child or parent
