Bible Reading & Commentary for the Week June 22nd – June 27th 2020

LynnBible Reading Guide

Monday, June 22, Genesis 13

  1. 7 — The closest we may come to Abraham and Lot’s problem today might be an inheritance. Instead of quarreling over your inheritance, would you say to your relative, “You take the first choice”? Abraham made such a compromise because he trusted that the Lord would take care of him and the Lord did.  Read vv. 14-16.

Vv. 12-13, 18 — Notice the contrast between Lot and Abraham.  Lot flirted with sin.  Abraham moved away from it.  The next chapter proves Abraham made the right choice.

Tuesday, June 23, Genesis 14

Vv. 14-16 — This is the first war recorded on the pages of Scripture.  That Abraham received God’s blessing would tell us that govern- ments have the right to rescue others from injustice. (vv. 18-20)

  1. 18 — Melchizedek meant “King of Righteousness.” He was a priest, but not of the Levitical priesthood. That was not established yet.  Because his genealogy is not given and he appears to have no beginning and no end, he was a type of Jesus, our great and perfect High Priest.  Read Heb.

Wednesday, June 24, Genesis15

  1. 6 — True faith in the Lord is to have a faith such as Abraham had. He put his trust in something he never saw. We Christians today do that same thing.  No one has seen our final goal of heaven.  Yet we believe it exists.  We can be sure that heaven will be our final home because of the righteousness or sinlessness of Jesus which God charges to our account.  Because of that, St. Paul could write in Romans 8:1, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Thursday, June 25, Genesis 16

Vv. 3-4 — After 10 years of waiting for a child, Sarai and Abram both took matters into their own hands.  This was sinful on their parts and the result was bitter unhappiness for both of them. (v. 4)  We, too, need to wait patiently for the Lord. He promises never to leave us nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5), and makes all things work out for our own good (Rom. 8:28).  He always answers us in His time and in His way.

  1. 9-13 — The Angel of the Lord often means the pre-incarnate Son of God.

Friday, June 26, Genesis 17

Vv. 10-14 — Circumcision was an important covenant that God made with Abraham and his descendants.  It made them a part of God’s covenant people.  The covenant of circumcision was later replaced by Baptism.  While Old Testament circumcision involved a bloody change, in Baptism there is a painless, wondrous, miraculous change worked in us by God, the Holy Spirit.  In Baptism we are brought into God’s Kingdom, heading for heaven.  Read also Col. 2:11-13 and Titus 3:5-7.

Saturday, June 27, Genesis 18

Vv. 11-12 — Why did Sarah doubt?  Normally, 89-year-old women don’t have children.  However, “With God, all things are possible!”  (Matt. 19:26)  Let’s, therefore, never give up on the Lord.  Always heed and believe God’s command when He says, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you and you will glorify Me.” (Ps. 50:15)

Vv. 22-32 — Abraham revealed the trust that Sarah lacked as he interceded on Lot’s behalf.  Consider to what extent God would have spared Sodom and Gomorrah in answer to Abraham’s prayer.  Let’s daily struggle with the Lord in prayer as Abraham did, and never give up!  Let’s also remember to pray for our nation, our young men and women in the armed forces, for our families and for all Christians in our country.
