May 27, 2020 – Praise God For His Acts of Power

LynnDaily Devotion

Pentecost was a pretty exciting day. It started with the continued anticipation of the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Then there was the sound of the rushing of a violent wind. Then the tongues of fire appeared.

The Holy Spirit had arrived! And he gave them to ability to speak in other languages.

That’s a big day. Of course, the arrival of the Holy Spirit is what made everything else special. Without the Holy Spirit, it would have just been a bunch of guys sitting in a room waiting for something. The sound of the wind would have been interesting, but not remarkable. Even the tongues of fire—they would have been a fascinating sight, but, without the Holy Spirit, just weird. Can you imagine having a meaningless tongue of fire on your head? How long until you want it to go out? Speaking in other languages would still have been a big deal. But, if you don’t have anything important to say, one language is plenty.

It was the arrival of the Holy Spirit that gave meaning to everything that happened that day.

It still is. He arrives in baptism to give faith and salvation (Acts 2:38-391 Peter 3:21Titus 3:5). He arrives whenever the Gospel is proclaimed (Romans 15:14Ephesians 1:13). He arrives to save us (2 Timothy 3:15), change us (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14), equip us (Romans 12:6-8), and give us something to say (Romans 8:16).

That’s why I’m excited for church this Sunday—and Monday—and next week—and every week!

It’s pretty exciting whenever the Holy Spirit arrives. The Holy Spirit is coming. Let’s worship him.

Psalm 150:1–2 (EHV)

1Praise the LORD.

Praise God in his sanctuary.

Praise him in the expanse that shows his might.

2Praise him for his acts of power.

Praise him according to his abundant greatness.

God bless you,
