| Have you ever thought, “Boy, I could use a little rest!”? And then—you take a break and you’re still tired? Or—you sleep and wake up tired? Or—you go on vacation and come back tired? Or—you actually retire and find yourself busier than you’ve ever been before?
Rest is hard to find. Jesus said that God has hidden these things from clever and learned people and revealed to little children. Children can put their lives willingly into someone else’s hands. Clever and learned people aren’t willing to do that. Jesus promises rest for our souls. He tells us to do two things. First, come to him. That requires time. We take time to disconnect from schedules, to-do lists, demands, and stress to come to Jesus and sit at his feet. He tells us to read and to think about his word (John 8:31). He instructs us to meet in worship (Hebrews 10:25) and to take communion (Matthew 26:26). God comes to us in word and sacrament. Let’s meet him there. Second, we take his yoke. That means putting ourselves willingly into his hands—submitting to his will instead of demanding our own. That requires a childlike faith. It means sitting at Jesus feet like Mary (Luke 10:39), or sharing like Barnabas (Acts 4:36-37), or talking to people like Philip (Acts 8:30), or serving like Tabitha (Acts 9:36). It means walking by faith, not by sight—walking hand in hand with Jesus wherever he wants us to go. Whenever you need rest, come to Jesus. Matthew 11:25–30 (EHV)25At that time, Jesus continued, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from clever and learned people and have revealed them to little children. 26Yes, Father, because this was pleasing to you. 27Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wants to reveal him. 28“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
