Bible Reading and Commentary for the Week
May 23-28, 2016
Monday, May 23, Psalms 119:81-120
vv. 92, 103, 105 – God’s Word is astounding and spectacular. It helps us rise above the problems of life (v. 92). Its taste is never bitter, but fills our lives with sunshine (v. 103). It guides us perfectly in life. (v. 105; Prov. 30:5)
Tuesday, May 24, Psalm 119:121-176
v. 142 – Why is God’s Word outstanding and far above the wisdom and great philosophies of men? That’s because it is absolute truth and brings every generation righteousness. Righteousness is the sinlessness Jesus won for us. It gives eternal life.
v. 164 — Seven is a number of completeness. Think of the seven days of creation. As the Psalmist did, may we, too, raise our voices in praise to the Lord seven times a day! Psalm 119 in itself gives us many reasons to praise the Lord.
Wednesday, May 25, Psalms 120, 121
Beginning with Psalm 120 and going to Psalm 134 are Psalms of Ascents. These psalms were very likely sung as the Jews made their annual pilgrimages to Jerusalem to celebrate their religious festivals.
Ps. 120:2-4 – The broom tree was desert shrub. Set on fire, it probably caused a searing heat. This is also what an uncontrolled tongue does. As to the damage a sinful, unbridled tongue can do, read James 3:1-12. Only God’s Word can tame a deceitful tongue. (v. 4; Ps. 119:105)
Ps. 121:7,8 – The counterpart to this beautiful Psalm might be Romans 8. Both assure the Christian that through faith in Jesus, the Lord will keep us safe and secure in this life, and at death take us into the joy and glory of heaven.
Thursday, May 26, Psalm 122
vv. 1, 6, 7 – This would be a good psalm to read every Sunday. We, too, should rejoice to go to God’s house and worship that Descendant of David who brought us eternal peace and prosperity, Jesus Christ, our Lord. (v. 5) Let’s also pray for the peace and security of our country so we can continue freely to worship the Lord and send His glorious, saving Word to all people in this world.
Friday, May 27, Psalm 123-124
Ps. 123:1,2 – Why do we, like Israel, lift up our eyes to the Lord our God, whose throne is in the heavens? It’s so that no human force will sweep us away. (Ps. 124:1-4) Where is our help? Our help is in the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. (Ps. 124:8 and Ps. 46)
Saturday, May 28, Psalm 125
v. 1 – Mount Zion here is a reference to the Holy Christian Church, God’s Kingdom of Grace. It cannot be shaken. It is the only kingdom that stands forever. As Jesus points out to us, “The gates of hell will not overcome it.” (Matt. 16:18) At the end of this earth’s existence, it will exist forever in the new heaven and earth. (Rev. 21:1,2)
