4/8 Assignment – Due April 22

We’re doing some free thinking and discussing a wide range of topics in class. We continue to work through the catechism (we’re on the First Article now), but there are some other topics we talked about that show up on this quiz.

There is no class next week on April 15. Pastor will be away at conference.

1. Write any passage and tell why God wants you to know that.

The answer for this will be varied. The point of the question is to help people understand that the bible is not simply another book among many. It is the Word of God. God speaks to us in his word. For example, when he says in Isaiah 43 “I have called you by name, you are mine.” He wants us to know that he knows and loves us personally, not just as a part of a larger group. He knows our name. He watches over us personally and we have nothing to fear in this world as long as God is with us.

2. Write the First Article up to the words: “my body and life.”

Here’s the whole first article. Anything after “my body and life” is extra credit.

The First Article I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

What does this mean?

I believe that God created me and all that exists, and that he gave me my body and soul, eyes, ears and all my members, my mind and all my abilities.

And I believe that God still preserves me by richly and daily providing clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, spouse and children, land, cattle, and all I own, and all I need to keep my body and life. God also preserves me by defending me against all danger, guarding and protecting me from all evil.

All this God does only because he is my good and merciful Father in heaven, and not because I have earned or deserved it.

For all this I ought to thank and praise, to serve and obey him.

This is most certainly true.

3. Name what God did on each day of creation.

1. He created light.

2. He separated the waters to make the sky.

3. He made the dry ground appear and created the plants.

4. He created the sun, the moon and the stars.

5. He created the fish and the birds.

6. He created the animals and man.

7. He rested

4. Write out Romans 8:28.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

5. What does God use to take care of us?

The passages in this section are all extra credit.

1. Our abilities: Deuteronomy 8:17–18

17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.

2. He gives us gifts and blessings: James 1:17

17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

3. He uses our circumstances to bless us and help us grow: Romans 8:28

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

6. What does the Bible say about divorce?

a. It’s sin: Matthew 5:32

32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.

b. Divorce is only valid in God’s eyes for marital unfaithfulness or for the malicious desertion of an unbeliever.

Matthew 5:32

32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.

1 Corinthians 7:15

15 But if the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace.
