11/12 Assignment – Due November 19
On Wednesday, we took out quiz, reviewed the first five chapters, talked about two student questions, and studied the Second Commandment. Here is the quiz:
1. Are gay people allowed in our church?
1 Timothy 2:4; Romans 1:26-27
Of course they are. All sinners are allowed in our church. The church is a gathering of sinners who need God’s forgiveness and have a desire to grow in faith and godly living.
We recognize that all sins are covered by the blood of Christ. The sin of homosexuality is no different. People who have chosen to pursue homosexuality will be encouraged to repent just as we encourage every other sinner to repent.
2. Is cremation okay?
The Bible does not prohibit cremation. There is nothing wrong with the process of cremation, it simply accelerates the the process of turning the body into dust.
Someone who thinks he can evade God’s judgment through cremation or tries to hide from God, has a sinful and an ignorant attitude. In a case like that, the decision to try to evade or hide from God is a sinful decision.
3. The Second Commandment
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God
What does this mean?
We should fear and love God that we do not use His name to curse, swear, lie
or deceive, or use witchcraft, but call upon God’s name in every trouble, pray,
praise and give thanks.
4. Is it okay to deceive people if you don’t lie?
Deceiving someone is just another form of lying. For example, if a child came home and said to their parent, “I was punished in school today for something I didn’t do!” However, what they were punished for is not doing their homework.
They may not have told a lie, but they deceived their parents into thinking they were punished unjustly. They actually were punished for something that they didn’t do, so they didn’t lie. But they were punished justly and tried to lead their parents to believe that they were punished unjustly and so tried to deceive them. It’s just another way to lie.
5. What does He forbid us to do with His name?
James 3:10 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.
a. He forbids cursing.
Matthew 5:37 37 Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
James 5:12 12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your “Yes” be yes, and your “No,” no, or you will be condemned.
c. He forbids swearing falsely or needlessly.
b. He forbids using His name to lie, or deceive anyone.
d. He forbids sorcery or witchcraft, etc.
6. How are we supposed to use God’s name? (What do we do with it if we don’t swear with it?)
Psalm 50:15 15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”
a. We call upon Him in every trouble.
b. We pray.
c. We praise Him.
d. We give thanks.
